Going out with a bang: everything you need to know about Bonfire Night

04 Oct 2016

Remember, remember! Autumn seems to have crept up on us and 2016 is speeding by that we’re struggling to keep up with it. Where has the year gone? With this, November is just around the corner, which can only mean one thing: Bonfire Night! So lock up your pets to keep them safe, find your left glove, and get ready for the fireworks… literally.

A brief history: what even is Bonfire Night?

In short, we set off fireworks because it’s the anniversary of when Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament, back in 1605. He wanted to get rid of King James I and his government. How did they get found out? I hear you ask – well, one of Guy’s guys, wrote a letter to his mate who worked in Parliament to warn him to stay clear on November 5th. One of the King’s men found this so the plot was ruined. Guy and his team were then arrested, tortured and killed. Talk about a plan backfiring.

Where are you going this year?

You can say what you like about us Brits, but you can’t deny that we know how to get festive! Around the UK, there are thousands of events, for Bonfire Night, whether that’s a giant affair in London, or in your Gran and Grandads garden with the family. Here are a few, impressive, Bonfire Nights Britain has to offer:

  • Lewes, Sussex: They take this celebration very seriously with dress-up, 17 burning crosses and plenty of fireworks. It takes place in the quiet county, and certainly makes a bang. It is a ticketed event, so if you’re planning on going, make sure you book beforehand to avoid any disappointment.

  • Plymouth Hoe: If you’re more about the fireworks on scenic and striking backgrounds, this may just be the place for you. The display has views of the Royal Citadel Walls and Smeaton’s Tower. It also has a fairground for the kids (and the big kids).

  • Battersea Park, Central London: With tons of places to eat, drink and be merry, this firework display, on the banks of the River Thames, is very popular. Also, if crowds aren’t for you, you can take a firework cruise.

Keeping everyone safe:

Of course, there are health and safety rules to follow in order to have a smooth-running evening. You know this. You know to put gloves on when you have a sparkler, you know to keep your pets indoors, and you know to be careful when setting off fireworks. However, have you got all the correct equipment to ensure your event is safe? Barriers and fencing may just be what you need to guarantee maximum safety and security. Whether you’re holding a smaller event at your local pub, or there are thousands of people attending, fencing not only keeps people the correct distance away from dangerous areas, but also controls crowd sizes and keeps equipment safe. Here at TopFenceHire, we have all types of fencing and barriers to make sure your event is safe and everyone is protected. From security fencing, crowd control barriers, traffic barriers and safety fencing, we have everything you need so you comply to health and safety regulations, your Duty of Care is met and your evening can run smoothly and be organised.
